U.S. wholesale prices jumped 0.4% in September as food costs rose by the largest amount since May. The Labor Department said Wednesday, Oct. 14, that the September increase in its producer price index, which measures inflation before it reaches the consumer, followed a 0.3% rise in August and a 0.6% surge in July which had been the biggest monthly gain since late 2018. According to a report released this week by the state Department of Health says more than 1 in 5 Long Island adults said they worry about having enough money to buy nutritious meals.
In Suffolk, the percentage of residents who said they were food insecure stood at 23.1%. In Nassau, it was 21.1%.
Those numbers were slightly better than the state average, with nearly 1 in 4 New Yorkers reporting food insecurity.
