WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Americans wait until the last minute to file their taxes — and this year is no exception. Today is Tax Day, the federal deadline for individual tax filing and payments — which means the IRS will get tens of millions of last-minute filings both electronically and on paper. As of April 8, the IRS received more than 103 million returns this season and has sent more than 63 million refunds worth more than $204 billion. Meanwhile, many people will get their refunds for this year before they get refunds for last year. At the end of the 2021 tax season, the agency had 35.3 million returns waiting for processing, its biggest backup ever. One reason: the tax IRS says every paper return is processed by a human.
