Lake Ronkonkoma, NY- There’s been a spike of COVID 19 cases at one Long Island elementary school. According to the New York State Covid-19 report card, 20 children at have tested positive at Hiawatha elementary school in Lake Ronkonkoma in the past two weeks. Hiawatha is part of the the Sachem Central School District- the second largest school district in New York State. Hiawatha sent a letter home to parents and caregivers addressing the outbreak and detailing several changes the school is taking take to help stop the spread. According to a letter dated on November 10th, the school will work to limit the number of children in the lunchroom, this will be done by cohorting the children into two groups which will alternate into the cafeteria every other week. Hiring additional staff to help with the lunch changes. A greater focus on social distancing and mask wearing. And 5th graders will no longer change classrooms.
