Shirley, NY- A man was rescued from the rough water on Thursday night at Smith Point Beach. Suffolk County Police say Marine Bureau and Aviation Section officers were called to the scene at 6:34 p.m. Officials say Aviation Section officers used drop sticks to light up the water so the swimmer could swim to the sticks and make himself visible. Meanwhile a local Fire Department was able to then rescue the man and pull him to safety. The swimmer was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, for evaluation.
