Nassau County has a new plan to alert swimmers about shark sightings

Lido Beach, NY- At ocean beaches Nassau County, you might see something new flying as you enter- a purple flag, with a white shark in the middle. That purple flag, is a new warning system being used by beaches in Nassau County to alert beach goers that a shark had been spotted in the water in the past 24 hours. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran unveiled the program on Monday at Nickerson Beach, noting that Nassau County had recorded more shark sightings to date this year, than in previous years.

The purple shark flag system of notifying bathers of recent shark sighting is not currently being used at New York City, New York State or Suffolk County Beaches.
