Seals named Joan Jett & Billy Joel to be released today back into the ocean

Riverhead, NY- For the first time in almost two years you can join the New York Marine Rescue Center, on Friday, April 16th, as they release two seals back into the ocean.  The seals named Joan Jett and Billy Joel were undergoing treatment at the Riverhead facility for ailments including dehydration.  Joan Jett, a female harbor seal, was found in January 2021 by a beach walker at Georgia Beach in Easthampton.  Billy Joel, gray seal pup, was found at Kismet Beach on Fire Island on April 8th, 2021.

Friday’s event will follow New York State COVID-19 guidelines.  Social distancing rules will be in place.  Capacity will be limited.  To attend the event, contact Danielle Perillo at 631-745-1711 or Maxine Montello at 631-278-7316.
