Storm halts ferry service

Storm halts ferry service

(East Farmingdale, NY)  A powerful nor’easter with whipping winds, blinding snow and coastal flooding, has halted ferry service on Long Island.  The WALK Weather Center says to expect seas 3-6 feet above average across Long Island with the storm.  The National Weather Service has issued Coastal Flood Warnings and Coastal Flood Advisories, in effect through Tuesday.

On the North Shore, the Port Jefferson Bridgeport ferry, all service across the Long Island Sound for Monday has been canceled.  The Cross Sound Ferry which takes passengers from Orient Point across the Long Island Sound to New London, Connecticut, has also canceled service for Monday.

On the South Shore, the Fire Island Ferries, which offer service to Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Atlantique, Dunewood, Ocean Beach, Seaview and Ocean Bay Park have canceled ferry service starting Sunday until further notice.  Sayville Ferry Service, operates to Fire Island Pines, Cherry Grove, Sailors Haven and Water Island,  and is operating on a winter schedule, which only offers weekend service, and over the weekend, service was canceled due to ice.
