MTA considers major service cuts

NEW YORK (AP) — New Yorkers are getting more details on potential service cuts and fare hikes for buses, subways and trains. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority was presented a series of options at its monthly board meeting Wednesday. They include 50% cuts in regional rail service and 40% service cuts to subways and buses. Other proposals include eliminating unlimited seven- and 30-day MetroCards and upping the fee for a new MetroCard from $1 to as high as $3. The MTA is facing billions in budget deficits over the next four years due to drastically reduced ridership during the new coronavirus pandemic. The authority is seeking $12 billion in federal aid that could forestall some of the measures.
