Nassau County breaks ground on new park to honor 9/11 hero

(Oceanside, NY)-  On what would have been the 55th birthday of NYPD Bomb Squad Detective Luis G. Alvaraez, lawmakers, friends and family broke ground on a new park in Oceanside in his memory.  Alvarez was a leading voice for the Victims Compensation Benefits fund and passed away after a battle with cancer stemming from his assignment at Ground Zero.  At the ground breaking ceremony, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said “I am honored to dedicate this park in his name – to serve as a reminder of his sacrifice, unwavering fight for 9/11 first responders, and a tranquil neighborhood space, designed by his family, for all to enjoy”.
