Police: 2 men arrested on weapons charges with baby in vehicle

Nassau County Police arrested two men in Massapequa on Sunday night.  Officials say on October 4, 2020, Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team, observed a black Acura traveling southbound on Dover Street at a high rate of speed and failing to maintain a lane.  Authorities say officers activated their emergency lights and pulled the vehicle over on Colonial Drive.  Police say a handgun was found under the driver’s seat and a substance believed to be marijuana.  18-year-old Ariel Serrano Ochoa, of Bay Shore and 20-year-old Kaliem Tharpe, of Massapequa were arrested without incident.  Police say Tharpe’s 8 month old daughter was in the vehicle at the time of arrest.  The child was released to the custody of her mother at the scene.

Defendant Serrano Ochoa is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Speeding and Failure to Signal.

Defendant Tharpe is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Both defendants were arraigned Monday, October 5, 2020 in Mineola.
