Governor Kathy Hochul says inflation rebate checks will still be mailed out to millions of New Yorkers — even as the state faces a financial hit from the federal budget.
The governor announced Wednesday that about 8 million residents are expected to receive checks, thanks to a $3 billion budget surplus during the last fiscal year. Hochul says the extra money came from higher-than-expected tax collections driven by inflation — and she wants to return it to taxpayers.
“We collected more money than we expected because of inflation,” Hochul said. “And that came off the backs of hardworking families in New York. So my view is: give it back to them.”
On Long Island, about 1.25 million people are set to get rebate checks worth up to $400.
