North Babylon fire department will undergo mandatory sensitivity training

Newsday is reporting that the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company will undergo mandatory sensitivity training after a viral video showed the department’s fire chief cursing at a child during an emergency call.

Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer says the department must also update its policies for dealing with minors.

The incident happened on August 4th, when Fire Chief Peter Alt was recorded using profane language toward a young girl as she was being placed on a gurney. The video spread widely on social media, sparking outrage.

In a letter to the local NAACP branch, Schaffer called the chief’s behavior “disturbing and unacceptable” and said it failed to meet the standards of professionalism expected of a volunteer firefighter.
