A full shutdown of one of the East River rail tunnel will begin Friday night at midnight as part of a three-year rehabilitation project.
Amtrak says the full shutdown is necessary to conduct critical infrastructure repairs, to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012. LIRR leadership have said that a full shutdown could result in “catastrophic” service disruptions for LIRR trains.
