Suffolk County Police say they arrested two men for attempting to scam an elderly Huntington woman out of thousands of dollars Tuesday afternoon. An 83-year-old woman received a phone call on June 23rd, 2020 from an individual who claimed the woman’s granddaughter had been arrested for a DWI. The caller stated someone would come to the victim’s home to collect $7,500 to cover the granddaughter’s attorney fees and provided the woman with a numeric code. The woman determined the call was a scam and called 911 at approximately 11:30 am. Suffolk County Police Second Precinct Crime Section officers worked with the woman to watch her house during the exchange. Felix Collado and Jose A. Cabrera-Urena approached the house in a 2012 Honda CRV and Collado engaged the woman in conversation. After it was confirmed he was there for the money, officers approached the house and both men fled the scene in the Honda. Both were apprehended by Second Precinct Crime Section officers a short time later at approximately 3:30 p.m. Second Squad detectives charged Collado, 43, of 2415 Creston Ave., Bronx, and Cabrera-Urena, 29, of 2686 Bailey Ave., Bronx, with Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree. Cabrera-Urena was also charged with Reckless Driving and multiple vehicle and traffic violations. Both will be held overnight at the Second Precinct and are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on June 24. Police are asking for other individuals who may have been a victim of this scam to contact Second Squad Detectives at 631-854-8252.
