News Headlines: Thursday, June 18th 2020

  • On Wednesday Governor Cuomo,  said that New York City is on track to enter phase 2 on Monday.  Long Island is still on target to enter phase 3, on Wednesday, June 24th.  Cuomo also designated Juneteenth as a holiday for state employees… and said he will propose legislation next year to make it a permanent state holiday.
  • NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city is launching an online database that will let New Yorkers track disciplinary cases against police officers accused of excessive force and other violations.
  • The Justice Department wants Congress to do away with the legal protections afforded to online platforms. Under the proposed changes, Facebook, Google, Twitter and others would lose their shield against legal responsibility for what users post.
  • There is new information about what caused the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna — and seven other people. Federal investigators say it seems the pilot was disoriented while trying to fly through thick fog
  • Nassau police say a 33 year old Franklin Sq woman was arrested after she allegedly hit her ex boyfriend with her car.. and took off.  Cops say the incident happened early Sunday morning on Jericho Turnpike in Floral Park .. the victim suffered a head injury and was listed in serious condition.
  • Black lives matter protesters marched Wednesday in Oceanside… Today protesters plan to head to Port Jefferson.
  • The Eastbound Northern State Parkway was closed for hours Wednesday after a 2 car crash took the life of a 47 year old Smithtown woman.  State police are asking anyone with information to call Troop L.
  • The Quaker Oats company says it is retiring the brand Aunt Jemima, saying the character is “based on a racial stereotype.”.  Quaker says a new name will be rolled out before the year ends.
