Buzz for Wednesday May 22

The first Jones Beach concert of the season at coming up next week---  and we’ve got your tickets!   Rascal Flatts playing the beach Friday night- May 31st-  and we’ll be giving you another shot at winning tickets tomorrow morning in the Showbiz Buzz.

She was only a runner-up on American Idol’s season 5- -- Side note here, do you remember who did win??  (Taylor Hicks)  Or who was the most successful runner up???  (Chris Daughtry)  Not that Kellie Pickler’s done so bad--- she’s carved herself out a somewhat successful country music career and she’s managed to stay in the spotlight…. But now she’s a big winner = having been presented with the disco ball trophy as surprise winner on Dancing with the Stars on the season 16 finale last night. 

So now what are you going to watch?  Well a new reality competition show on FOX fires up tonight- with a two-hour series premier of MasterChef as home cooks audition dishes. And season finales of The Middle, Modern Family, Law & Order: SVU,  Criminal Minds, Chicago Fire, Nashville – with Brad Paisley performs with Rayna and Deacon.

A mighty fine show on your computer tonight - as Billy Joel, Emeli Sande  Gloria Estefan, Jesse McCartney, James Taylor and Trisha Yearwood take the stage to honor Carole King as she becomes the first woman to receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress – and yes, she’ll most likely spend some time at the piano as well.  President Obama will host the event which streams live tonight and be filmed for the "In Performance at the White House" special that will air next Tuesday night, May 28th, on PBS

Actress and comedienne Carol Burnett will be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the top award for American comics, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said on Tuesday.  Burnett, 80, whose Emmy-winning sketch comedy program "The Carol Burnett Show" was a mainstay on U.S. television from 1967 to 1978, will receive the award during a ceremony at Washington's Kennedy Center in October.  Burnett received her big break in the Broadway musical "Once Upon a Mattress" in 1959, which earned her a Tony Award nomination.  She won her first Emmy Award in 1962 for her work on "The Garry Moore Show" sketch comedy TV program, but cemented her comedic reputation by parodying the film "Gone with the Wind" and the TV soap opera "As the World Turns" on her own show.  Past recipients of the award, which was first given out in 1998, include Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Bill Cosby and Tina Fey. Television comic and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres won last year.

It's official: SIMON COWELL has chosen three women --DEMI LOVATO, KELLY ROWLAND and PAULINA RUBINO-- to be his fellow judges on "The X Factor." "It’s taken more than a decade, but I’m delighted to finally be on a panel with three girls (I think!)," Simon said.

VH1 is putting their own version of "The View" together which will air daily at 9 am beginning Jun 03.   "The Gossip Table" will feature five Hollywood gossip columnists from various publications and sources:

"The Show with Vinny" promises to be pretty funny. Star magazine reports that former "Jersey Shore" star VINNY GUADAGNINO will invite the guests on his show to have dinner with his family. MTV has already lined up MARK WAHLBERG, JENNY McCARTHY and KE$HA to enjoy a good Italian dinner and conversation.

FOX is doing a movie based on the "Travis McGee" novels by JOHN McDONALD. There are 21 novels in the series, and LEONARDO DiCAPRIO has been already rumored to be starring in the first one, which is being written by DENNIS LEHANE, the same guy who wrote "Shutter Island."     The movie will be based on the book “Deep Blue Good-by,” and reportedly be faithful to the novel, which is about a guy who lives on a 52-foot houseboat in Ft. Lauderdale called The Busted Flush and is a "salvage consultant" who recovers others' property for a fee.

Microsoft unveiled the new Xbox One yesterday. It replaces the X-Box 360, which NPD Group says was the best-selling console device for the 28th month in a row in April.  The new version will do everything the old one did, and much more --Microsoft is trying to make the device into a central hub for all forms of entertainment in your living room.  Sony is trying to do the same thing with its PlayStation 4, and Nintendo with its new Wii U.   The new XBox has a larger hard drive, faster processing power and memory, and includes a live TV tuner, a built-in DVD and Blu-ray player, lets you do Skype video conferencing calls, and also has the ability to stream games over the web.
 Microsoft also announced they will be doing a TV version of their popular "Halo" game. STEVEN SPIELBERG will be producing the live-action television series, which will be released as premium content on the new Xbox One.    At the press conference, Spielberg admitted to being an XBox fan and said he'd played the game for decades. But --no stars have been announced for the franchise yet.

The regular, sand-colored Levi's that MARK HAMILL wore throughout the original "Star Wars" movie were sold at auction last night by the Nate Sanders auction house. They went for $36-thousand price is a bit less than expected --they were expected to sell for as much as a hundred-thousand bucks.

And a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, with notes by J.K. Rowling, sold for a record 150,000 pounds ($227,421) at a charity auction in London on Tuesday.  In a statement auction house Sotheby's said the 1997 edition set a new record for a book by Rowling. The tome includes handwritten notes by the author along with 22 original illustrations and 43-pages of extra "second thought" commentary by Rowling.   It was purchased by an unidentified bidder who won the auction over the telephone.

It comes with deleted scenes and the featurettes "Not in My Town: Making The Last Stand," "Cornfield Chaos,” “The Dinkum Firearm and Historic Weaponry Museum," "Actor-Cam Anarchy: With Johnny Knoxville and Jaimie Alexander.”

The comedy “Stand Up Guys” Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin star as aging con men gathering for one last crime. Co-starring Julianna Margulies and Lucy Punch. Extras include commentary deleted scenes and the featurettes "American Muscle: The Stand Up Stunt Driving Scenes," "The Lowdown on Making Stand Up Guys" and "The Stand Up Songs of Jon Bon Jovi."

Mood-enhancing drugs are blamed for bloody deeds in the psychological thriller ” Side Effects” with Channing Tatum, Rooney Mara, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones. It comes with the featurettes "Aliza Website Experience" and "Behind-the-Scenes of Side Effects.”

Star-crossed teen lovers uncover a small Southern town’s supernatural secrets in “Beautiful Creatures” the adaptation of the best-selling young adult book starring Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons and Viola Davis. Extras include deleted scenes and the featurettes “ICONS by Margaret Stohl,” “Book to Screen," "The Casters," "Between Two Worlds," "Forbidden Romance," "Alternate Worlds" and "Beautiful Creatures: Designing the Costumes."

The action/adventure “Parker” stars Jason Statham a double-crossed professional thief out for revenge with the help of an unlikely partner (played by Jennifer Lopez.)   

TV that’s available include --"Saving Hope: The Complete First Season"  True Blood season 5 and the PBS special American Masters Mel Brooks: Make a Noise.

Antonio Banderas will star in The 33, which is based on the story of those Chilean miners who were trapped underground for more than two months back in 2010.

ED SHEERAN has finished recording his second album, but it won't be out until next year. His debut effort, "Plus," is still doing well so why rush it? Ed is on tour with TAYLOR SWIFT, and they sat next to each other Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards.

With "Smash" wrapping up this Sunday with a two-hour series finale,  at least one of the cast has her next job lined up.   KRYSTA RODRIGUEZ who played Ana Vargas on "Smash,". And  ZACHARY LEVI, who starred in TV’s spy spoof, "Chuck," will headline a new romantic comedy called "First Date." The musical was written by the man who came up with "Gossip Girls," AUSTIN WINSBERG. Previews begin July 9th at the Longacre Theater, and opening night is August 8th.

New shows scheduled for the Paramount in Huntington-   including The Blues Brothers starring Dan Aykroyd & Jim Belushi  on Friday night , , Aug. 9   and BB King on Saturday night, October 19th.     Tickets for both on sale this Thu. May 23 @ 10am!

CBS-TV pulled last night’s episode of "Mike & Molly" --even though it was the third season finale-- out of sensitivity to the victims of that devastating tornado in Oklahoma.   Turns out the season finale featured Mike and Molly confessing important news to each other as a tornado descends on Chicago! The episode will be broadcast at a later time.

The Dancing with the Stars two-hour finale tonight-- 

Sunday night ratings are out and the big winner was ABC’s "Billboard Music Awards," which pulled in 9.5 million viewers which is about a third more than last year's show and more than enough to come out in first place.  It beat out the Tim McGraw special which topped the finale of "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" – which was down a quarter from last year and a new low for a finale of the franchise.  And has not  been renewed for another season, either.    

JOE JONAS, GWEN STEFANI and FERGIE are reportedly all being considered to fill the the judges seats on "American Idol"?   But that’s according to Star magazine so it could all be a bunch of hooey. 

A bit more reputable, the Hollywood Reporter says that bothELLY ROWLAND and PAULA RUBINO are "near a deal" to join SIMON COWELL and DEMI LOVATO on the next season of the show - auditions kick off in Charleston, SC, tonight.  Kelly was previously a judge on the eighth season of the British version of the show.

If you get the EPIX premium cable channel, you'll get to see "MADONNA: the MDNA Tour" on June 22nd. It was filmed mostly at the Miami stop on the tour, which, by the way, was the highest grossing concert trek of 2012. More than 2.2-million fans showed up over the 88 shows all over the world.

Covergirl will be releasing a new line of makeup for the next “Hunger Games” movie “Catching Fire.” Fashionista.com says the cosmetics will be called the Capitol Collection.

CATE BLANCHETT has been confirmed as the new face of Giorgio Armani Perfumes. Women’s Wear Daily says Cate will be the face of an ad campaign for “Si” , a new fragrance that hits stores at the end of the summer.

BRITNEY SPEARS released her new single on Friday. ABC debuts a new crime drama series tonight.  “Motive” follows a Vancouver homicide detective (Kristin Lehman, from TV's The Killing) and tells us the murderer's identity -- but not the motive -- at the start of each episode.  On the opener, a popular high-school teacher (Joey McIntyre, New Kids on the Block) gets whacked for reasons unknown.

FOX has a new show too- In the comedy “The Goodwin Games,” siblings vie for their late father’s inheritance. Becki Newton (How I Met Your Mother, Ugly Betty) and Scott Foley (TV's Scandal, Felicity) star. On the opener they learn that they’ll have to compete in a series of strange challenges designed to restore family unity.

Precious star GABOUREY SIDIBE was just added to the cast of "American Horror Story" and is headed to New Orleans to shoot.  The latest installment of the anthology is called "American Horror Story: Coven"

Good news for "Doctor Who" fans --the BBC has announced the popular series will be back for an eighth season with MATT SMITH returning as the current doctor for the next round. The new season will follow the 50th anniversary special, which is set for Nov 23 this year

"Star Trek Into Darkness" earned 70.6 million at the box office over the weekend ($84.1 including the Thursday opening day) worth of tickets sold in North America and another $40 million internationally.   Meanwhile, the movie "Fast & Furious 6", but it opened in the UK this past weekend and set a new record for a three-day weekend opening there.  It’ll open in the U.S this coming weekend.

Now that Wesley Snipe's finished his stint for tax evasion, he’s joing the cast of the SLY STALLONE sequel "The Expendables 3." alongside LIAM HEMSWORTH, JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME and CHUCK NORRIS

Deadline.com reports there's a GREGG ALLMAN biopic underway.   The movie will be based on the NY Times bestselling autobiography, and pick up with the formation of the ALLMAN BROTHERS band with original Allman Bros. tracks used in the movie as well as re-recorded performances by the actors and musicians who'll be featured in the film. No word on casting yet --or whether CHER will show up in the film, either.

There's also a new biography of MARILYN MONROE in the works as well.   The film will be based on the "imagined" fictional biography of the legendary star done by JOYCE CAROL OATES. While the book was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award back in 2001, it should be noted --it's a complete work of fiction.   No word on who'll play Marilyn in the movie, although at one point NAOMI WATTS was set to star in the film.

The London Sun tabloid reports ANGELINA JOLIE will play her mother in a biography of MARCHELINE BERTRAND. She was an actress who gave up her acting career and co-founded the All Tribes Foundation, to aid Native Americans, and the Give Love Give Life organization, to raise public awareness of women's cancers. (both of which clearly influenced her daughter’s work)  The movie is being financed by BRAD PITT's company, Plan B Productions.

Buzz for Friday May 17

With this week’s opening of “Star Trek Into Darkness" holds somewhat of a monopoly over the box office this weekend.   It’s playing in 37-hundred regular theatres and another 336 IMAX locations.  Deadline.com reports over 400 showings are already sold out for the weekend, and estimates are the movie will open with over $80-million bucks.  (It cost $190 million to make, but will most likely break even by next weekend when you add in the overseas markets.)   And, adding in that overseas market, after just 23 days in theaters, "Iron Man 3" crossed the $1-billion mark yesterday.

The sci-fi flick's only notable competition aside from  "Great Gatsby" and "Iron Man 3." Is the limited release drama/comedy "The English Teacher" stars Julianne Moore, Nathan Lane, and Lily Collins. Moore plays a 40-year-old, single high-school english teacher whose life takes an unexpected turn when a former student, now in his 20s, comes back into her life.

NBC says SHAKIRA and USHER will be returning to "The Voice" -- but just not next season. The pair are taking some time off but will be back for season six in the Spring of 2014, replacing CEE LO GREEN and CHRISTINA AGUILERA so they can take some time off, too.   However, ADAM LEVINE and BLAKE SHELTON apparently have signed and will stay on for both Season Five and Season Six as well.     This means Adam, Blake, Cee Lo and Christina will be on hand for the blind auditions which begin again Jul 08 just three weeks after the current season’s finale on Jun 18.

Last night’s American Idol wrapped up season 12 with a finale that included performances by judges KEITH URBAN and MARIAH CAREY, former judge Jennifer Lopez, ARETHA FRANKLIN, PITBULL and yes, Psy, doing his new single, "Gentleman."   And when it was all over 23-year-old CANDICE GLOVER was named the winner of Season 12 – becoming the first female singer to win since JORDIN SPARKS in 2007.    

The world’s most famous Korean rapper also set to perform this weekend at the Billboard Music Awards – that will be handed out this weekend in Vegas.   Madonna will be there to pick up her Top Touring Artist honor and a rare appearance by Prince who will accept the Billboard Icon award and perform as will Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Selena Gomez and Nicki Minaj.  Presenters include Cee-Lo Green, Carly Rae Jepsen, Alanis Morisette, Shania Twain, Kesha, Miley Cyrus, Celine Dion and Psy.   The Billboard Music Awards will air live Sunday at 8 on ABC.

The New Broadway Cast Recording of the musical "Pippin" will be released digitally on June 4th, followed by a CD on July 9th. You get all 16 songs from the show, including ANDREA MARTIN's show stopper, "No Time At All," which features a 700-member amateur chorus. The album also features four songs from the show without vocals, so you can do your own "Pippin" karaoke.

The last episode of "The Office" was on last night --and STEVE CARRELL paid a surprise visit for the final episode, and Steve's character, Michael Scott, was the best man when Dwight married Angela. It’s the number-one most-downloaded app of all time, so you gotta wonder how the Angry Birds movie will do…  all we know so far is that Sony Pictures is working with Rovio, the company behind the game, it’ll be a 3-D film, and should hit theaters July Fourth weekend in 2016.  No word yet on any voice talent, although Daily Variety says it’s being produced by the same guy who did "Despicable Me"

The Hollywood Reporter says HBO has ordered seven episodes of JAMES GANDALFINI's series, "Criminal Justice."    --which originated on the BBC, but will run as a limited series.  On the show, Gandalfini plays a jailhouse attorney who get involved in a case where a guy wakes up after a night of partying with a stranger to find her stabbed to death and is charged with her murder.

CW network’s "Sex and the City" prequel, "The Carrie Diaries" will be adding a young Samantha Jones. The Hollywood Reporter says, producers are casting for the younger Samantha, originally played by KIM CATTRELL on the HBO series. for the upcoming second season of the show.  Viewers will get to see how the pair met on the new show, and eventually, if the show keeps getting renewed, how all the characters met.

Most of us hit up Groupon for a bargain on pizza or carpet cleaning, but the discount site has much more to offer --like a chance to meet a real-life superstar! The UK's Daily Mail reports 60 fans of GWYNETH PALTROW's Goop website were offered the chance to fly to New York for a VIP event with the actress where they would get two nights lodging, spa treatments, dinner at a French restaurant and an autographed cookbook for just $2-thousand dollars. Buzz for Thursday May 16

New in theaters today….  Star Trek Into Darkness –  which actually opened at midnight… and has a load of showtimes today if you’re a big Trekkie and cutting work or taking a long lunch.  In this latest adventure,  The Enterprise enters a war zone to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.  Starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood.

"Star Trek's" CHRIS PINE and JAKE GYLLENHAAL are reportedly in talks to join the cast of Disney's film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical "Into the Woods," which already stars JOHNNY DEPP as The Big Bad Wolf and MERYL STREEP as the witch.   Deadline.com says Pine and Gyllenhaal would take on the roles of Cinderella's Prince and Rapunzel's Prince.

The biopic of the late Casablanca Records founder NEIL BOGART will start shooting early next year. The Hollywood Reporter says JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE has signed on to play the music mogul in "Spinning Gold." They're still trying to find the right director for the project. RCA Records has already agreed to release the soundtrack, which will probably feature some of the artists Neil made famous, including KISS, DONNA SUMMER and the VILLAGE PEOPLE.

CBS unveiled their new fall schedule yesterday – and it didn’t include the much-talked-about EDDIE MURPHY's reboot of "Beverly Hills Cop."   The network says, they were more interested in a half-hour comedy.  So is that it?    Well, no because now it appears that "Beverly Hills Cop" could show up on another network --or maybe even cable.

An amazing number of season finales tonight--- on ABC Grey's Anatomy; Scandal.  On CBS: Big Bang Theory; Elementary. On CW: The Vampire Diaries; Beauty and the Beast.  FOX: American Idol (2-hr season finale).  NBC: After nine seasons, "The Office" closes tonight with a final 75-minute episode.  

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and Boston's DROPKICK MURPHYS have teamed up for a special charity EP to help out the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings.  The Boss and the Murphys have recorded a new version of the band's song, "Rose Tattoo." The EP also includes acoustic versions of "Jimmy Collins's Wake," and "Don't Tear Us Apart." This is a digital-only release and you can get it right now from iTunes.

To go along with their 20th anniversary tour, the BACKSTREET BOYS will also release a new album. It's called "In A World Like This," and is due out on July 30th. The first single is title track, and you'll be able to download that on June 25th. Plus, if you buy tickets to see the Backstreet Boys, you'll get a free download for another track on the album, "Permanent Stain."

NICOLE KIDMAN has already modeled for Chanel and now she has been tapped by Jimmy Choo shoes to be the face of their fall ad campaign. The ads have already been shot and will debut in August.

Original supermodel CHRISTY TURLINGTON BURNS is returning as the face of Calvin Klein... 25 years after she first struck a pose for the brand. Women’s Wear Daily says she just shot a full underwear campaign that will start appearing on billboards and in magazines in September. (And she doesn’t look like she’s aged at all.) Christy first modeled for Calvin Klein back in 1988 for their “Eternity” fragrance.”

Congratulations to AMERICA FERRARA, who is set to graduate from the University of Southern California tomorrow. The actress revealed on Twitter that it "took me 10 years, but it feels great!" America is receiving her bachelor's degree in international relations and enrolled at the prestigious college back in 2002, but took a leave of absence when she landed her plum role on "Ugly Betty."

Another celebrity Twitter hack- or maybe it was just a joke but yesterday’s tweet from Sean “Diddy” Combs read:   "MY BIG NEWS: So happy to announce that Im a series regular on DOWNTON ABBEY-my favorite show”  The show’s logo was added as his picture on the account as well. But PBS has released a statement that no, he won't be joining the cast of Downton Abbey.
