LI's Main Beach Among Best in the Nation
Another Memorial Day weekend is here. I don't know whether to rejoice or to panic, because of how fast the first 5 months of 2011 whooshed past! In any event...
"Dr. Beach" himself, Stephen Leatherman, released his annual list of the Top 10 Beaches in the nation today, and East Hampton's Main Beach was ranked No. 4. Fourth-best in the entire country...impressive! I've never been there, and unless you live in East Hampton village, you probably haven't either...I understand parking is an issue. But I may be adding it to my list of things to do in Summer 2011.

In the Company of Amazing Women
While attending the annual ceremony for Long Island Business News' annual Top 50 Most Influential Women in Business Awards, I kept wishing that I'd brought my two young daughters. I usually don't miss a chance to expose Gabby, 13, and Gillian, 10, to smart and successful women, but I assumed this was more of an "adult" event. Turns out that a good number of the 650 attendees were young children whose mothers, no doubt, share my feelings!
In any event, it was a wonderful night, and I'd like to congratulate all my fellow honorees, including Dori Scofield, founder of Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue; Dr. Jean Cacciaubaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital; Suffolk County Clerk Angie Carpenter, and so many other extraordinary women. And a shout-out to the new friends I made when the honorees were lined up alphabetically: Cat Taylor, assistant VP of Oncology Services at South Nassau Communities Hospital (standing in front of me) and attorney Miriam E. Villani of Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker (who brought up the rear, immediately behind me).
Congratulations ladies! You all rock! And thank you for being a great example for all our daughters!

Support the ALS Ride for Life
Would you be able to make your way across Long Island using nothing but a wheelchair, and do it in 12 days? Not only has Chris Pendergast done it...he's doing it again, for the 14th time!
Chris (pictured above) is the founder and leader of the ALS Ride for Life, which raises awareness of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. They also raise funds to support patients and ALS research. ALS is a virtual death sentence that kills almost all of victims within 3 to 5 years of diagnosis. Chris, however, is the rare case that survives long-term. He was diagnosed in 1993, and is still leading the Ride for Life, long after he thought someone else would have taken over. In fact, many of those who were diagnosed after him, and whom he groomed to take over, are now gone...and he still rolls at the head of the procession.
Please support the ALS Ride for Life! They will be riding through the Northport-East Northport School District, where Chris taught, before his diagnosis. All honks of support are greatly appreciated. If you'd like to make a pledge, please click here.
