Setting the record straight once and for all, Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!! by Dr. James E. Carlson breaks the chains of ignorance when it comes to dieting and staying healthy. Concern for his patients led this medical doctor to unveil common misconceptions regarding carbohydrates, fat, proteins, sugars and cholesterol that are perpetrated and perpetuated by the medical community. Regrettably, with the advice of doctors millions of Americans are eating themselves into an early grave. Now, avoiding a priori reasoning, readers are able to draw their own conclusions on what lifestyle is best for them and how to initiate the most sensible diet possible. Take back your life-the fact is that low fat, low cholesterol diets are dangerous. With humor, wit and a good dose of common sense, this guide shows readers that a diet with daily sources of fat, cholesterol and protein is effective in treating disease.

"If I still choose to eat bread is whole wheat bread healthier than white?"  Luci- Setauket

DR. CARLSON'S ANSWER:
Hi Lucy. When it comes to bread we have to remember that 'sugar is sugar is sugar.' What this means is that the sugar in whole wheat bread is the same as the sugar in white bread. Yes, the whole wheat is less processed and contains more vitamins, minerals and fiber, but whole wheat bread still contains sugar. So, no, whole wheat bread is not healthier despite what most medical professionals think. But I do have good news. If you like bread, there is low carb bread available from Peppridge Farm and Arnold. This bread has a good amount of fiber with carb counts in the 5 or 6 gram range per slice. So if you are like most people and cannot live without bread, go for the lower carb breads. Hope this helps!

"Do you honestly believe that eating an equivalent serving of beef is healthier than eating an apple or any other piece of fruit?  I don't."   Ann-Shoreham

DR. CARLSON'S ANSWER:
Hello Ann. This is a very interesting question and thank you for asking it. It must be stressed that I do not believe anything unless I see it actually work in clinical practice. Now I am not sure how we would equate a serving of beef with that of a serving of fruit. Beef consists of protein, fat and cholesterol; while fruit simply contains sugar in the form of fructose. So these two food items are completely different from one another, therefore I do not know what an equivalent serving would be. You asked if I honestly believed beef consumption was healthier than eating fruit and the answer will be yes. But let us examine why. When we use the term healthier we usually mean free of disease. If we look at the most common diseases I see in my office they would be obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and reflux esophagitis (commonly called heartburn). If I allow those patients to continue to eat fruit their diseases worsen. This can easily be checked through clinical blood work and other diagnostic tests. When these same patients now consume more beef and completely eliminate fruit their diseases get better. The effects of increased beef consumption are oftentimes so dramatic, that most of my patients who suffer from the diseases I mentioned do not need medications to treat whatever medical illness they may have. Hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Choir--to Whom One Preaches Sometimes--ME!, March 23, 2008
By Bente Videbaek "devourer of books" (NY USA) -
I am a very new patient of Dr. Carlson's. So new, in fact, that I had no idea this book would be out till I saw a stack in the front office and snagged me one (double co-pay!) out of curiosity about my new doc-guy. I had time over this weekend and read the book. OK, Dr. Jim is somewhat repetitive in his style, but many of us need that. He is also funny, which all of us need. What's better, I agree with him! I have no medical background to speak of, but I have been resisting fad diets and fad findings all my life since, at the age of 10 in my case, butter had been in and out of grace several times. At that point--early rebellion--I decided to eat what I like to eat and skip the rest. Lucky for me, I do not like sweet things. Now I am justified. But I don't like butter either, so where does that leave me... All in all, I am a very healthy, I believe, late-middle-aged woman, and I firmly believe that my good health (apparently I have beat Crohn's...) is due to my diet. Go with Dr. Jim! He rocks! And life is much sweeter without sacrifice, and without a bad conscience!

5.0 out of 5 stars How our doctors dietary ignorance is killing patients, May 16, 2008
By Steve Burns "Life long learner" (Nashville, TN) -
This is an excellent book written by a medical doctor who uses low carbohydrate diets in his practice to lower blood pressure, enable patients to lose weight, control blood sugar in diabetics, raise HDL cholesterol, and help with the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and coronary artery disease. He explains through biochemistry how lowering your carb intake reduces the levels of insulin in your blood stream and it is the high levels of insulin that cause negative biochemical reactions at the cellular level. He also explains why the maistream medical establishment rejects low carb diets and tows the party line of low fat and low cholesterol diets even though there are no studies that conclusively prove this diet does anything positive for your weight loss or health. Doctors prescribe drugs they are not dieticians.

This book is written in a friendly conversation format and is an easy read. The author's positive experiences with low carbs in his practice are nothing new. The same principles were written about years ago by other doctors in "Protein Power", "The Atkins diet revolution", "The Carbohydate Addicts Diet" and "The Zone" this last one was written by an endrocrinologist.

I myself lost 60 pounds in 3 months following a moderate low carb diet of about 100 carbs a day balancing the carbs with protein. The book is about explaining why low carb diets work with little to no dietary advice provided, I sugggest reading any of the above books to learn how to implement the doctors advice into a real diet. I also highly suggest that you get 20 or more grams of fiber a day and drink plenty of water if you do try out a very low carb diet. But do not go to extremes, a low carb diet is really just balancing out you carb/protein intake which should be about equal, the standard American diet currently is about 4 times as many carbs or more than protein. Buy this book it could literally save your life, the current American diet is very dangerous and your doctors advice could literally kill you.

I have been a patient of Dr. Jim's for 6 years and have been following his advice regarding carbs, fat and cholesterol. I have experienced every benefit he describes in this book (with wit and wisdom mixed with solid facts).I have never been healthier. As a 60 year old grandmother my cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure are all great and I take no medications. Everyone should not only read this book, they should buy it for their families and friends. Share the knowledge. Do it for someone you love!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing way to Live!, March 14, 2008
By Sean Gallagher "Sean" (usa) -
I have tried the two main low carb diets that are available and though they work, why I should remain on the diet was never fully explained. I read the books, followed the diet plan, and after a tremendous effort, I would eventually go back to the foods I was eating before. After reading Genocide, I now understand WHY I can't eat those foods. Genocide is a no nonsense approach to healthier living through correct nutrition and the application of simple scientific facts. In our society of instant gratification, plentiful amounts of any food, and the ability to buy most anything, sticking to the dietary example of Dr. Carlson is hard, but it is truly worth the effort. I understand the need to keep my distance from sugars and carbs, and because I do I have no problem sticking to the dietary changes offered by Dr. Carlson. Once you read this book, you will want to buy copies for your friends. You could pass on your copy, but then you wouldn't be able to read it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars sugar is sugar is sugar, April 9, 2008

Dr. Carlson does a superb job exploiting the perpetual misconceptions of the ever so recommended low fat- low cholesterol diet. The author is so informative in giving the reader the biochemical explanation of the metabolic pathways in regard to the role of the consumption of triglycerides, cholesterol, and carbohydrates. (in laymen's for those not in the medical/scientific community). While I certainly do not claim to be a conspirative theorist, one can not go without questioning the medical community and the drug companies. They are supposed to be there for the greater good; are they not? Why are they keeping this dietary evidence out of the public eye; and continue to give the public incorrect and dangerous information? Big $$$ for them. I have yet to stop conjuring up all these mind-blowing excerpts from this gem from the moment I completed its 303rd page. This is a MUST read for anyone interested in living a healthier lifestyle through their diet. I have MADE 3 people order this book. It quite possibly can be one of the greatest gifts one can give themselves. This is real eye-opening stuff. I can only wish that every Doctor, Dietician, and Nutritionist would read this book and help disband a priori reasoning from their professions....Remember sugar is sugar is sugar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!!, April 12, 2008
By Tom Donn "Telling the Truth" (Medford, NY)
Having been patients of Dr. Carlson for over 10 years, my wife and I are no doubt proof his conclusions are accurate. He breaks the technical medical facts into clear language anyone can understand. Hopefully other doctors will take the time to review the evidence, become enlightened, and provide their patients with the correct dietary advise. As for the proof I spoke of, my wife is diabetic but is not on insulin because of the proper diet. I lost 30 lbs and brought my blood pressure down and came off the blood pressure medication. I have more energy and feel great. If you are over weight, have high blood pressure, have low energy, or a diabetic, you must read this book. Your life depends on it.

Very well written book debunking the merits of low fat diets. Dr. Carlson has very impressive credentials and writes the book in simple layman's terms which speaks directly to you. Interesting, informative and a "must read" for those struggling to lose weight and obtaining information on how to lower cholesterol levels. Highly recommend.

I AM A PATIENT OF DR. CARLSON'S AND SO ARE MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY HE KNOWS HIS STUFF!! I AM A DIABETIC AND I HAVE FOLLOWED HIS DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS OVER THE YEARS. MY GLUCOSE HAS BEEN IN NORMAL RANGES NOW WITH NO MEDICATION AT ALL. I FEEL GREAT. I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY DOCTORS IGNORE NUTRITION AND JUST KEEP WRITING PRESCRIPTIONS AND OVER MEDICATING THEIR PATIENTS. THANK YOU DR. CARLSON FOR CARING ABOUT YOUR PATIENTS AND TAKING THE TIME TO ALWAYS EXPLAIN AND ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS.
