BACK INTERVIEW

TIP OF THE MONTH
One movement that tends to aggravate back pain, more than others, is bending and twisting simultaneously! Combined, these movements place force on the facet joints and the discs. Some people often bend and twist to pick an object off the floor, reach for the milk in the refrigerator, pull a file out of the cabinet, and so on.

Q: How big a problem is back pain?

8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from low back pain in their lifetime.

1 out of 3 Americans has back pain.  One third of the country, right now!

Q: Are surgeries common?

Surgeons tell us that only about 5% of these low back cases are appropriate candidates for surgery.  That means that 95% suffering people must seek other treatment.  The RAND corporation recommends 4-6 weeks of non-surgical care before most surgeries.

Q: What can cause chronic back pain?

Chronic back and neck pain can come from dysfunction of the joints, muscles, nerves, or any combination of these elements.

Q: What are some common causes of chronic back pain?

Your spine is made of bones, called vertebrae:

7 Cervicals (neck) C1-C7

12 Thoracics (mid back) T1-T12

5 Lumbars (lower back) L1-L5

And the Sacrum

We’re supposed to carry all our weight through the thick body of the vertebrae cushioned by the soft, shock-absorbing intervertebral discs.

Sometimes though, all our weight can be shifted to the small joints at the back called Facet joints.  This can be painful, as they aren’t designed for this.  Joint dysfunction, muscle splinting, inflammation of the nerves can all add up to back pain.

 Q: What about disc conditions?

Another source of chronic back & leg pain or neck & arm pain comes from injured or degenerated discs.

The healthy disc has an outer layer of annular fibers (like concentric rubber bands) and a soft, gel-like center, which gives it a shock-absorbing ability.

In a herniated, or protruding, or “slipped disc” the nucleus migrates as the annular fibers weaken, through degeneration or injury.

The severity of the back or extremity symptoms may tell us how the disc is compressing, or irritating the exiting nerves or the spinal cord.

Early diagnosis treatment can save a lot of suffering and lost time.

Q: What is Non-surgical Decompression?

Over 40 years ago, research began to be pioneered by Dr. James Cox, which today has revolutionized both the Osteopathic and Chiropractic disciplines.

His painstaking work has demonstrated thousands of successful recoveries from back, neck, leg, and arm pain (in scientific journals) without surgery or drugs.

I’m proud to have traveled and trained under Dr. Cox myself and, in addition to being certified in all his techniques…ours is the only office in this are offering his newest instruments for decompression of the neck and upper back, in addition to the lumbar spine.

Patients from as far East as Amagansett are traveling to our Smithtown office.

Q: What does Decompression do?

There are 4 Proven, positive, sustainable, and sometimes life-changing effects:

  1. Increasing Disc Height (improving disc circulation)
  2. Decreasing pressure on the disc center (up to 192mmHG)
  3. Increasing space for the exiting spinal nerves
  4. Restoring normal joint motion

Q: Is all spinal decompression the same?

In the past, you may have heard an alphabet soup of the names of some conventional spinal decompression devices using linear or 2-dimensional decompression.

We’re excited to be using the next generation of decompression instruments…kind of like when LASIK® changed the vision care field.

The Extentrac (With M3D® technology) has provided the doctor with a new level of three-dimensional specificity and freed the patient from being in one position for treatment.

This painless, non-invasive procedure allows the Doctor to target specific discs, directing treatment right to the source of pain.

With moveable leg and lumbar sections…here the patient can be vertical, horizontal, face-up, or face-down.  While effectively restoring normal ranges of flexion, extension, side-bending, and rotation, we can accommodate individual weight and physique.

But, in the end it is the skill and training of your doctor that matters the most.  We trained with the architect of the Extentrac, himself, and we are the only office in Suffolk County making this state-of-the-art instrument available.

Q: What conditions are responding?

The FDA clearance for the Extentrac (with M3D®) is for Low back pain (and sometimes radiating leg pain or sciatica) due to:

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Acute joint problems of the facets

And…the newest Cox Decompression® instrument has shown excellent patient response with a wide range of neck and back problems:

…Degenerative spinal and acute disc conditions

…from Headaches to Pelvic pain

…from pregnant patients to those with osteoporosis…

There’s a lot of excitement around here about bringing Suffolk County, the kind of technology that was only previously available in Manhattan.

TESTIMONIALS

"I have had varying minor back issues probably for the last thirty years. About a year and a half ago, however, my back problems became severe, significantly limiting my ability to function, to work, engage in sports, even to sleep. After an MRI, recommended by my Internist, I was diagnosed with two herniated discs, one in my lower and another in my upper spine. I tried various forms of therapies to no avail. As the pain worsened, surgery became a serious possibility.

After researching other alternatives, I became aware of Doctor Daniel Crews of Advanced Back Solutions and the “Extentrac” technology. To be honest, at that point I was rather discouraged and not overly optimistic. After an initial consultation with Dr. Crews, however, I was impressed with his knowledge and professionalism and decided to give it a go before resigning myself to surgery. And am I glad I did! After about two or three sessions on the “Extentrac,” I realized that I had made the right decision as I began to feel my condition improve. By the twelfth session, I was pain free and have remained so ever since. Needless to say, I have become a fan of Extentrac and especially of Dr. Crews.

While I have always appreciated the value of Chiropractic, it was not until I met Dr. Crews that I truly understood all the benefits that Chiropractic has to offer. Dr. Crews has given me back my life."

"As an Athlete, I have subjected my body to rigorous training activities in order to stay on top of my game. Throughout my career with the style of play that I emphasize, I have put a lot of strain on my lower back area . Over the years I have tried numerous types of treatments from chiropractic, physical therapy, myofascial therapy, acupuncture and other decompression tables in order to keep my body in peak physical condition. Even though I felt relief for short periods of time with the other apparatuses including traction and new decompression tables, I have felt the most sustained relief using the Extentrac Elite. It has given me the ability to put my body back into proper alignment so that I can continue to condition at a high level of training necessary to sustain maximum performance of my sport"

"I am writing this letter to first thank you for getting the pain in my lower back down to a level which is very tolerable and enables me to go about my normal lifestyle. I would like to share my experience and tell a brief account of what happened to me. I am a NYC Firefighter and was injured in the line of duty while carrying out a large woman at a fire operation. In the process, I herniated two discs in my lower back and one in my upper cervical region. I was on several medications and did months of physical therapy as initial treatment. The pain did subside somewhat but I continued to have what I call 'flare ups'. The doctors that were treating me had told me that surgery might be the next option for me; I wasn't thrilled. Then I had another flare up in late October and I could hardly walk without severe pain/ That is when I heard about the revolutionary Extentrac Elite Therapy and I decided to give it a try. Well, after about 8-10 sessions, I really started to feel good and will continue to maintain the level I am at now. His theory on spinal decompression seems to be on the money."

"I have seen the Extentrac Elite and was very impressed. The proper ingenuity and principles are being applied that can significantly alter for better, the lives of millions of folks that have chronic or new conditions. (That could not have been helped by another method.) This will be a Godsend."
T T , D.C. - Levittown, NY P.S. I intend to get one!

"I have a history of two severely herniated discs at the levels of 4 & 5 Lumbar vertebrae. I have sustained these injuries approximately six years ago...I was sent by my treating chiropractor for Extentrac treatments after having an adverse reaction to a flexion-distraction disc traction table. I was treated by him only with his extension table on with three consecutive treatments of 2 minutes each in the same visit. I felt immediate improvement in both a decrease in antalgic and muscle spasms. It is now 24 hrs. after...and I am 60% improved by one treatment. I will be returning for more treatments, and I believe the treatments will quickly and expeditiously improve my condition. I heartily recommend this treatment."
