Massapequa (WALK) - He spent hours on the water, but a man is safe after his jet ski died while out with a friend on Sunday evening.
The watercraft sputtered to a stop in the bay off Massapequa, where the 50-year-old victim and a friend had reportedly launched their craft around dusk, from a dock off Alhambra Road. The friend went off to find help, but by the time he returned with first responders, his buddy was nowhere to be found.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Nassau Marine Police Bureau took part in a 2-1/2 hour search, along with police helicopters, bay constables and Massapequa Fire Department volunteers. The man, whose name was not released, was eventually spotted in Massapequa Cove, trying to swim back to shore. He was not hurt and refused any medical treatment.
Shortly before he was found, the man's jet ski was discovered partially submerged in the bay. It was towed to Wantagh State Park.
