West Hempstead (WALK) - A rabbi from Queens who once taught religion at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County has been charged with molesting a student.
Detectives report the arrest of Gary Lieberman, who's accused of abusing a 10-year-old boy while the two were alone in a learning resource room of the school, located in West Hempstead. Inappropriate conduct also took place in a school bathroom, according to investigators. Lieberman, 56, allegedly warned the victim that if he told anyone, he wouldn't be believed because Lieberman was a rabbi.
Police aren't saying when the alleged abuse occurred but it was sometime before August 2010, when Lieberman was fired from his job at the Hebrew Academy. Police believe he may have continued teaching after that, at other private religious schools.
Lieberman is being arraigned this morning on sexual abuse charges at First District Court in Hempstead.
Police are investigating whether there may have been other victims of abuse. Victims, or anyone who knows of one, is asked to contact the Special Victims Squad of Nassau Police at (516) 573-4022.
