New York - (WALK) Nassau County residents are celebrating their success in influencing the Port Authority to revise its most recent runway expansion plan at John F. Kennedy Airport, but a runway will be extended and residents are concerned they may still encounter more overhead traffic and noise.
The original PA plan would have increased noise in residential neighborhoods north of JFK. Runway 4L22R will be extended by 728 feet to meet new federal safety requirements, but community activists convinced the PA to refrain from moving the aircraft "touch-down" point more than 3,300 feet to the north and removing more than 800 trees in Idelwild Park.
A 30-day comment period on the plan will extend to November 18. Comments may be sent by mail to: Port Authority of NY & NJ, 225 Park Avenue South, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10003, or sent to: JFKRWYEA@PANYNJ.GOV, with the subject heading: "JFK RWY 4L-22R
