Lindenhurst (WALK) - Police across the state promised to crack down on drunk driving over the holiday weekend, and it turns out they weren't kidding.
Local cops made a slew of DWI arrests, including a Lindenhurst man who was allegedly caught drunk at the wheel with his 2-year-old son in the car. Gilbert Lopez-Silvero was arrested after police received a 911 call about a domestic dispute on East Merritt Street in Lindenhurst. Lopez-Silvero had left the home but returned while police were there, according to investigators.
Lopez Silvero, 38, was charged with aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, while allows for upgraded charges against DWI suspects who are arrested with a child passenger. His baby son was in the suspect's Dodge Durango but wasn't hurt.
On Sunday, 6 people were arrested at a sobriety checkpoint set up on the William Floyd Parkway, at Smith Point County Park in Shirley. Those arrested include:
Two vehicles were seized as a result of these arrests, according to police, who also say a total of 571 vehicles went through the checkpoint between 8 and 11 PM on Sunday night.
