Bethpage - (WALK) A Long Island-based company promises a full investigation and report after nearly 40 people were injured during a July 4th fireworks display in California.
The display in Simi Valley, California was produced by Bay Fireworks of Bethpage. Authorities say a mortar shell exploded prematurely, tipping a launch platform and sending explosives into the crowd.
An estimated 10,000 people attended the show at a park about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Victims ranged in age from 17 months to 78 years old; some were burned, others were injured by shrapnel, some were trampled as spectators ran to avoid the projectiles. At least three victims were hospitalized as of Friday night, according to authorities.
