Riverhead - (WALK) Be veeeery careful, and stay off the hiking trails and bike paths at Enterprise Park: it's deer hunting season in Calverton.
Town of Riverhead officials say access to paths and trails at the 2,900-acre property is assigned to hunters through the month of January for hunters using shotguns and muzzle loading weapons.
Enterprise Park is owned by the Town of Riverhead, and hunting is reserved for town residents and property owners. More than 100 eligible people participated in a lottery to win times and places to hunt, according to officials.
Riverhead Town is reportedly negotiating with New York State to host a similar lottery for the opportunity to hunt deer at Wildwood State Park. If successful, any licensed hunter in New York would be eligible to participate.
A federal, deer hunting program is scheduled for February in communities throughout Long Island's East End.
