Hampton Bays (WALK) - An unidentified boater is dead after a mishap on the East End Monday afternoon.
According to Southampton Town police, the unidentified victim and a relative had gotten out of their small aluminum boat to go clamming in Flanders Bay, right near the mouth of Birch Creek, when the boat came off its anchor and drifted some distance away. The victim tried to swim toward the boat, but then disappeared below the water.
A passing vessel heard cries of help from the relative and rescued him. They then searched for the victim and found his body, while putting in a call for help to the authorities.
A U.S. Coast Guard boat arrived and did CPR as they took the victim to the Point Road boat ramp in Flanders, where a waiting ambulance then rushed him to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Doctors could not resuscitate him.
Southampton Town police say that names are being withheld while the investigation continues.
